By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is… — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”

Words by Confucius (551-479 BC) — Chinese philosopher and teacher.

About this quote

This saying outlines three distinct paths to gaining wisdom. Reflection requires deep thought and self-examination, making it the most elevated approach. Imitation involves following the good examples of others, which is straightforward and accessible. Learning through personal experience, while effective, often involves making painful mistakes, which makes it the hardest and most bitter teacher of all.

This insight is traditionally attributed to the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius. His teachings were compiled by his followers in the Analects during the Warring States period, shaping centuries of Eastern ethical thought and personal philosophy.

People often display this print in a home study or library to encourage quiet contemplation during work.
