Docendo Discimus — Seneca | Printable Wall Art

“Docendo Discimus”
“By teaching, we learn”

Words by Seneca (4 BC-65 AD) — Roman Stoic philosopher and statesman.

About this quote

This phrase highlights the reciprocal nature of education. When you explain a concept to someone else, you are forced to clarify your own thinking, identify gaps in your understanding, and consolidate your knowledge. Sharing wisdom is not a one-way transfer, but an active process that deepens the teacher's mastery just as much as it instructs the student.

The phrase is adapted from Seneca's Letters to Lucilius, written around 65 AD, where he notes that men learn while they teach. It became a popular Latin motto for schools and universities throughout Europe.

People often hang this print in a home study or classroom to encourage lifelong learning and collaboration.
