Ей-богу, выпрыгну в окошко! — Nikolai Gogol | Printable Wall Art

“Ей-богу, выпрыгну в окошко!”
“By God, I'll jump right out the window!”

Words by Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) — Author of Dead Souls and The Government Inspector.

About this quote

This line captures a moment of comic panic and drastic escape. It expresses the overwhelming urge to flee an uncomfortable, absurd, or overwhelming situation by any means necessary, no matter how extreme. Gogol uses theatrical exaggeration to highlight human cold feet, commitment phobia, and the desperate desire to reclaim personal freedom when feeling cornered by social expectations.

The line is spoken by the reluctant groom Podkolyosin in Nikolai Gogol's 1842 satirical comedy play Marriage. Terrified of commitment at the last moment, he utters the line and leaps from the window to escape his own wedding.

People often hang this print in a hallway or near an exit for a touch of dramatic literary humour.
