生死事大 — Zen Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“生死事大”
“Birth and death are the great matter”

A traditional Japanese saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This classic Zen phrase reminds us that existence itself is the most important subject we can contemplate. Life and death are impermanent and fleeting, so we should not drift through our days on minor distractions. By confronting our mortality, we learn to appreciate the present moment and focus deeply on what genuinely matters in our daily lives.

This four-character phrase is a traditional Zen warning often carved onto wooden blocks outside monastery halls. While its exact origins are unknown, it has been used for centuries across East Asia to urge monks towards earnest spiritual practice.

People often hang this print in a study or quiet reading nook to encourage daily mindfulness and perspective.
