沉舟側畔千帆過，病樹前頭萬木春 — Liu Yuxi | Printable Wall Art

“沉舟側畔千帆過，病樹前頭萬木春”
“Beside the sunken boat, a thousand sails pass by; before the withered tree, ten thousand trees spring to life.”

Words by Liu Yuxi (772-842) — Tang dynasty poet known for philosophical and resilient verse.

About this quote

This famous couplet uses images from nature to convey hope and resilience in the face of misfortune. A single ruined vessel or a dying tree does not stop the wider movement of spring or the flow of the river. It encourages us to look beyond personal setbacks and recognise that life continuously renews itself with quiet, inevitable optimism.

Written by the Tang dynasty poet Liu Yuxi in 826. It comes from a poem composed in reply to his friend Bai Juyi during a banquet in Yangzhou, following Liu’s long period of political exile.

People often display this piece in a study or workspace as a daily reminder of quiet perseverance.
