어리석은 백성이 이르고자 하는 바가 있어도 마침내 제 뜻을 능히 펴지 못하는… — King Sejong the Great | Printable Wall Art

“어리석은 백성이 이르고자 하는 바가 있어도 마침내 제 뜻을 능히 펴지 못하는 사람이 많으니라”
“Because of this, many ignorant people, though they wish to speak their minds, are in the end unable to express their feelings.”

Words by King Sejong the Great (1397-1450) — Joseon king who created the Hangul alphabet.

About this quote

This line reflects a deep empathy for everyday people who were frustrated by a complex writing system they could not learn. King Sejong believed everyone deserved the ability to express their thoughts, record their experiences, and participate fully in society. It highlights the belief that literacy is a basic human right rather than a privilege reserved for the elite.

Written by King Sejong in 1446, this passage forms part of the preface to the Hunminjeongeum, the document introducing the newly created Korean alphabet, Hangul, to the Joseon nation.

People often hang this in a study or library to celebrate the gift of literacy and clear self-expression.
