Sei allem Abschied voran, als wäre er hinter dir, wie der Winter… — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Sei allem Abschied voran, als wäre er hinter dir, wie der Winter, der eben geht.”
“Be ahead of all farewell, as though it already lay behind you, like the winter that is just now passing.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke encourages us to accept impermanence before loss actually occurs. By mentally anticipating farewells, we strip them of their power to shock us. Like winter giving way to spring, parting is a natural transition rather than an ending. Learning to let go continuously allows a person to live more fully in the present moment without fear of future grief.

Written in 1922 and published in 1923, this line appears in Rilke's *Sonnets to Orpheus* (Part Two, Sonnet 13). The collection reflects on loss, change, and the transience of human existence.

People often hang this print in a bedroom or quiet study for daily reflection during life transitions.
