Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. — Edgar Degas | Printable Wall Art

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

Words by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) — Impressionist painter and sculptor known for ballet scenes.

About this quote

Edgar Degas shifts the focus of creation from mere observation to communication. True art is not a literal copy of the physical world, but the deliberate act of guiding an audience to perceive emotion, movement, or perspective. The artist filters reality through their own vision, shaping how others experience and understand what lies beneath the surface of a scene.

Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist master celebrated for his paintings and sculptures of dancers. This observation reflects his disciplined approach to composition, recorded in nineteenth-century artistic commentary and memoirs rather than a single published text.

People often display this print in a home studio or creative workspace to inspire fresh artistic perspectives.
