An escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. — Mitch Hedberg | Printable Wall Art

“An escalator can never break, it can only become stairs.”

Words by Mitch Hedberg (1968-2005) — Deadpan stand-up comedian known for surreal one-liners.

About this quote

A classic piece of observational humour, this joke gently mocks our reliance on mechanical conveniences. Hedberg points out that when a moving staircase stops working, it does not become useless; it simply reverts to a standard set of stairs. The line highlights the absurdity of panicking over minor technological failures, encouraging us to reframe a modern inconvenience as a simple, functioning object.

This line comes from American stand-up comedian Mitch Hedberg. It was a staple of his live comedy routines in the late 1990s and featured on his acclaimed 1999 debut comedy album, Strategic Grill Locations.

People often hang this print in a hallway or home office to bring lighthearted humour to daily transitions.
