Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version… — Judy Garland | Printable Wall Art

“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”

Words by Judy Garland (1922-1969) — Actress and singer, star of The Wizard of Oz.

About this quote

This line encourages authentic living over the imitation of others. Copying someone else inevitably produces a flawed copy, whereas developing your own strengths allows you to achieve true excellence. The message urges self-acceptance and confidence, reminding us that individual identity carries far more value than attempting to fit into a mould designed by somebody else.

Attributed to the celebrated performer Judy Garland, this remark reflects her advice on navigating fame and identity. It featured in interviews later in her life and was famously offered as guidance to her daughter, Liza Minnelli.

People often hang this print in a dressing room or home office to encourage daily confidence and authenticity.
