Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles. — Voltaire | Printable Wall Art

“Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles.”
“All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.”

Words by Voltaire (1694-1778) — French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, and satirist.

About this quote

This phrase encapsulates a philosophy of relentless optimism, suggesting that whatever happens must be ideal because a benevolent deity created the universe. However, Voltaire used it satirically to mock the idea that human suffering is necessary or acceptable. It challenges us to question blind acceptance of misfortune and instead work actively to improve our world.

The line comes from Voltaire’s 1759 satirical novella Candide. It is spoken repeatedly by the character Dr Pangloss, a teacher who uses philosophical optimism to justify every absurd tragedy that befalls the characters during the Enlightenment.

People often hang this in a home study or library as a witty reminder to stay intellectually curious.
