A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability… — Aldo Leopold | Printable Wall Art

“A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community.”

Words by Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) — American conservationist, author of A Sand County Almanac.

About this quote

This line forms the core of modern ecological ethics. It proposes that human actions should be judged morally by their impact on the living world. Rather than viewing nature simply as a resource to exploit, Leopold suggests that an action is right only if it protects the health, diversity, and natural balance of the environment, placing humanity within nature rather than above it.

This statement appears in Aldo Leopold's influential 1949 book, A Sand County Almanac, within the essay titled The Land Ethic. Published shortly after his death, the work became a foundational text for modern conservation and environmental philosophy.

People often hang this print in a study or office as a daily reminder of thoughtful stewardship.
