教外別伝 — Zen Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“教外別伝”
“A special transmission outside the scriptures”

A traditional Japanese saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This core principle of Zen Buddhism suggests that ultimate truth cannot be fully captured in written texts or formal teachings. Instead, true understanding is passed directly from mind to mind, or master to student, through lived experience and personal insight. It encourages individuals to look beyond words and dogmas to find direct, unmediated awareness in their own daily lives.

This phrase is a foundational four-character proverb in Zen Buddhism, traditional to Chinese and Japanese monastic culture. While attributed to early Zen lineages rather than a single known author, it historically defines the tradition's emphasis on direct spiritual experience over reliance on sacred texts.

People often hang this print in a study or reading corner to encourage quiet focus and personal contemplation.
