Ein guter Mensch in seinem dunklen Drange ist sich des rechten Weges… — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe | Printable Wall Art

“Ein guter Mensch in seinem dunklen Drange ist sich des rechten Weges wohl bewusst.”
“A good man, in his obscure striving, is well aware of the right path.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This quote suggests that human nature possesses an innate moral compass. Even when someone feels lost, confused, or driven by dark, uncertain impulses, an underlying goodness will eventually guide them towards the right path. It offers a reassuring view of human trial and error, proposing that mistakes are a natural part of growth rather than a sign of moral failure.

It comes from Goethe's tragedy Faust, Part One, published in 1808. The line is spoken by God in the Prologue in Heaven, expressing ultimate trust in Faust's fundamental morality despite his impending struggles.

People often hang this print in a home study or quiet library for comfort during difficult decisions.
