A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without… — Chinese Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.”

A traditional English saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

Hardship and adversity are essential for personal growth. Just as a rough gemstone requires abrasive grinding to reveal its brilliance and smooth surface, a person needs to face difficult challenges to develop character, strength, and wisdom. Struggles should not be viewed as mere obstacles, but as necessary experiences that shape and refine our potential.

This traditional Chinese proverb has been translated into English in various forms since the nineteenth century. While sometimes misattributed to Roman writers in popular culture, its phrasing reflects classic Asian proverbial wisdom regarding adversity and self-improvement.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to offer steady encouragement during challenging projects.
