A day without sunshine is like, you know, night. — Steve Martin | Printable Wall Art

“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”

Words by Steve Martin (1945-) — Comedian, actor, and writer.

About this quote

This line subverts the expectation of a profound or poetic life lesson. By taking a cliché about metaphorical light and replacing the metaphorical punchline with a literal truth, it plays on how people deliver pseudo-philosophical advice. The hesitant filler words add to the comedic timing, poking fun at dramatic proverbs by pointing out that without the sun, it is simply dark outside.

American comedian Steve Martin popularised this piece of deadpan humour during his stand-up routines in the late 1970s. It reflects his signature style of anti-comedy, which parodied traditional joke structures and hollow inspirational sayings.

People often hang this print in a kitchen or hallway to add dry humour to their mornings.
