工欲善其事，必先利其器 — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“工欲善其事，必先利其器”
“A craftsman who wishes to do good work must first sharpen his tools.”

Words by Confucius (551 BC-479 BC) — Ancient Chinese philosopher, founder of Confucianism.

About this quote

This proverb stresses the value of thorough preparation before undertaking any task. A skilled worker cannot achieve excellence without the right equipment in good working order. Beyond physical implements, it serves as a reminder to cultivate skills, gain knowledge, and organise oneself before starting a project. Proper foundation ensures efficiency, quality, and long-term accomplishment.

The line originates from the Analects of Confucius, a collection of teachings compiled by his followers during the Spring and Autumn period in ancient China. It forms part of a conversation on governance and moral self-cultivation.

People often hang this print in a home office or workshop as a practical reminder to prepare carefully.
